Projects are very often selected and launched specifically to support a product in one stage of the product life cycle. E.g. marketing projects for company products in the “Introduction Phase” and development projects for products in the “Growth Phase”.
These days, many companies organize work increasingly around products (rather than traditional “operations”, such as “”Marketing” or “Finance”). These companies have a need for people in the role of the “product manager”, a role that generally requires both traditional operations management (typically in marketing and/or finance), and project management, especially agile project management. The product lifecycle construct is essential for those playing this role.
