“User Story Mapping” is a technique agile project teams use to organize product backlogs comprised of user stories. It was developed and popularized by Jeff Patton.
This technique is very similar to that of customer journey mapping, which is popular and important for marketing purposes. Some differences.
- One, CustomerJourney mapping often looks at the customer’s experience of a whole company over time, whereas “User Story” mapping looks at customer experience of a specific digital product or environment.
- Two, the contents of a customer journey map are typically not user stories in the conventional format (“As a user role, I want some feature for some reason. “) The contents of a user story map typically are such user stories at various levels of complexity – “epics” at the top of the map, simpler stories below.
- Following from this last difference, the contents of a customer journey map often refer to company goals, KPI, responsibilities, activities, etc., while the contents ofa user story map, being user stories, refer at first to specific features users want, and as mapped, to the work of the development team.
